AiR in Ålvik, Hardanger

Kunstnarhuset Messen was built as an administrational building in 1918 for the local metal-industry company Bjølvefossen. The building is very spacious and has a special atmosphere.

The centre offers an artist-in-residence programme for norwegian and international artists of all disciplines. Kunstnarhuset Messen also organizes seminars, workshops, exhibitions and various other artistic activities.

In Kunstnarhuset Messen you live and work together with other guest artists and artists from the region. At the moment there are eight local artists working in the house. The artist-residency can have duration up to 3 months.

Accommodation
There are two small apartments and five rooms available for guest artists. Rooms and apartments are equipped with furniture and bedlinen. Artists share kitchens and showers. The kitchens are fully equipped.

Studio / workspace
On the ground floor there are 3 studios available for guest artists, all with 4 metres height to ceiling. On the first floor there are 2 studios available. Wireless internet connection free of charge.

Location
Driving distance from Bergen to Ålvik is 2 hours. The village is located by the Hardangerfjord in Kvam municipality, and has a population of 740 inhabitants. There is a small village centre with a food store, a café, post office, school and church. Ålvik changed from being a rural farming area to an industrial village in 1905 when Bjølvefossen Industries was established. When Bjølvefossen built Ålvik, consultants and architects were hired to decide the colours and design of the village.
Nearest town centre is Norheimsund, 30 min. by car or bus.

Paid by the artist / provided by the programme
We offer a rent-free studio and accommodation. All other expenses such as living costs, travel, materials, insurance and transport must be covered by the artist.

Professional artists and senior art-students of all artistic disciplines can apply.
